Tempest Of Teapots In Bellevue
There will be quite a tea party over the weekend in Bellevue. “The Artful Teapot” is one of the highlighted exhibits at the newly remodeled Bellevue Arts Museum. But these aren’t your grandmother’s teapots.
The 250 pots on display are from the collection of Gloria and Sonny Kamm, a collection that numbers 7,500.
“It’s a very generous amount of teapots,” admits Gloria Kamm, “It’s sort of become obsessive and taken over our lives.”
There’s a pot that looks like an armadillo, made of bottle caps. There’s a bust of Elvis, a pot made from shredded five dollar bills and others that are more conventional — made of ceramic, glass and porcelain. “It’s really sculpture masquerading as teapots, so it does belong in an art museum.”
What do you do with that many teapots, besides loan them to the Bellevue Art Museum? Well, the couple has thrown some major tea parties!
“For example,” says Sonny Kamm, “When one of our daughter’s friends had a wedding shower, we pulled out all our bride and groom teapots. We probably filled fifteen tables.”
In fact, they could hold a tea party for every holiday or formula one race event.
“We have a lot of teapots that look like race cars.”
Those are on display, too. There’s even a teapot that looks like it’s made out of a carburetor.”
“We think there’s something for everyone,” says Gloria Kamm. And Sonny Kamm says, “We think it’s something even the guys will like — they’re usually a little hard on art museums.”
