New cafe focuses on tea

Kris Wells opened the tea spot in June because she needed to get her daily fix.

“Nobody in Tupelo really serves tea,” she said. “I like tea and there was really not any place for people like me to get it.”

Now, she gets her daily dose of Moroccan mint tea at the cafe inside Gloster Creek Village. Her tea menu features more than 20 tea options, including hot and cold and caffeinated and decaffeinated.

The most popular tea is red berry, which is made of a selection of dried berries and decaffeinated Ceylon tea, she said. Other favorites include chocolate tea and Caribbean breeze.

Wells also has tea that is tailored to coffee-drinkers’ taste buds. After all, she said, “Tea is all a matter of personal preference.”

In addition, Wells serves food, reflecting the tea spot’s slogan of “a healthier alternative to fast food.” The lunch menu consists mainly of green salads, pasta salads, fruit salads and pitas.

She said a lot of out-of-town customers have stopped by and all have commented about the increasing presence of tea at restaurants.

“The people all say tea is the fastest growing new drink from wherever they are from,” Wells said.

Wells said she hopes it will grow in Tupelo. One of her reasons for opening the tea spot is to introduce more people to tea.

“There are a few people here who know tea and know what to ask for,” she said. “Mostly what I run into are people who haven’t had tea and who are open to suggestions.”
