Time For Tea: Historical Society Offers A Genteel Break From Holiday Frenzy

At four o’clock one afternoon in 1840, Anna Marie Stanhope, the seventh duchess of Bedford, heard a faint growling in her royal tummy.

The duchess, it turned out, was experiencing hunger pangs, thanks to the noon meal having been skimpy. So the duchess asked that a tray of tea and bread and butter sandwiches be brought to her rooms. This became a habit of hers and she soon invited friends to join her.

Hence, the practice of afternoon tea was invented.

Lemon In Green Tea Has ‘Measurable’ Effect

People have been using lemon to flavor tea for years.

And it turns out that was a good idea.

Mario Ferruzzi, assistant professor of food science at Purdue University, recently released a study that shows adding lemon to green tea doubles the amount of antioxidants the body has to absorb. The antioxidants, called catechins, are linked to reducing the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disorders, obesity and diabetes.

Ferruzzi said the catechins usually break down once in the intestines, but vitamin C, which can be found in lemons, stabilizes them and allows about twice as many to survive.

Healthy Combo: Lemon With Green Tea

Citric juices of fruits like lemon and orange might boost the health benefits of green tea, suggests a new study.

Green tea has certain antioxidants or disease fighting properties. Juices of lemon, orange, lime and grapefruit enable these antioxidants to remain after digestion making the pairing even healthier than previously thought, the scientists fund.

They found that complementing green tea with either citrus juices or vitamin C increases the amount of catechins available for the body to absorb, reported health portal Medical News Today.

Catechins display health-promoting qualities and may be responsible for some of green tea’s reported health benefits, like reducing risk of cancer, heart attack and stroke.

While tea has long been a favorite drink of the Chinese, in the last few years, quite a few tea-flavored drinks are on the market. I was having a bad week&mdashlots of stress and not feeling well physically or emotionally. Turns out, it was the perfect time to be researching an article on tea. Sitting down with several local tea enthusiasts and sipping the ancient brew was just what I needed.

Tea has long been known for its tendency to slow people down, encourage social interaction and even improve its drinker’s health. Nearly every culture in the world has their own relationship with tea &mdash some more significant than others. Less complex than coffee in its growing habits, brewing methods and ways to drink it, tea is often likened to wine in terms of variety of flavors, character and tradition.
